Most people who are disappointed by an AI assistant didn't get a bad model — they got a bad prompt. They typed a vague request, the model guessed at what they meant, and the answer missed. The fix isn't a smarter model. It's a step that happens before the model writes a single word.
That step is mediation.
The problem with the blank box
A chat box is an intimidating thing. It asks you to know exactly what you want, phrase it precisely, and supply every relevant detail up front — all in one shot. Skilled prompt-writers do this instinctively. Everyone else types something like "help me write an email to my landlord" and hopes for the best.
The model then has to fill the gaps itself: Which landlord? About what? What tone? What outcome do you want? It picks plausible defaults, and those defaults are usually wrong. What an AI mediator does
An AI mediator sits between your rough request and the answer. Instead of guessing, it does three things:

- Asks the few questions that matter. Not a survey — just the handful of details that change the answer. You answer by tapping, not typing essays.
- Rewrites the request into a clear prompt. It turns your fragment plus your answers into a well-scoped instruction, and shows you the before and after so you can see exactly what changed and why.
Only then does the conversation begin — and it begins with a prompt that already contains everything the model needs.
Why "before and after" matters
The mediator doesn't hide its work. You see the improved prompt before anything is sent. That transparency does two things: it lets you catch a wrong assumption early, and it quietly teaches you what a good prompt looks like. Over time you write better requests yourself — the mediator works as training wheels you eventually don't need.
A good prompt isn't longer. It's more decided — fewer open questions for the model to guess at.
It degrades gracefully
A mediator should never be a wall. If clarifying questions can't be generated — no model key, a hiccup, whatever — the cycle still completes: your raw request, plus any context you gave, becomes the prompt and the chat starts anyway. The mediator improves the path to an answer; it never blocks it.
