Ask a general-purpose chatbot to add up a column of invoice line items and it will hand you a total, instantly and confidently. Sometimes that total is right. Sometimes it's off by a few dollars, and nothing about the answer tells you which. That's an uncomfortable place to be when the number decides what you pay, invoice, or report.
The reason is worth understanding, because it changes how much you should trust the answer.
Why plain AI is bad at math
A language model doesn't calculate. It predicts plausible text — one token at a time — based on patterns it learned from mountains of writing. When you ask "what's 4,318.50 plus 2,765.25," it isn't reaching for a calculator; it's guessing the most likely-looking sequence of digits. Often the guess is close, which is exactly the trap: close looks correct.
When a model produces a confident answer that isn't backed by anything real, that's called a hallucination.
